First Parts of “The Coddling”

  1. The difference between the two is that microaggretions are more of unintentionally phrasing words that may offense someone while trigger warnings are taught in courses that might cause a strong emotional response such as trauma. It matters in the education because everyone from any race studies the same courses in school or workplace and saying particular words may effect in disrespecting their culture or identity. The ideas in the first section are to talk about the terms of microaggrestions and trigger warnings and how we should raise awareness to the words we use again people. I agree to this article talking about raising awareness but at the same time for people who have experienced trauma or dark past to get excuse of not doing the assignment is a bit too much. As the article says “students who have previously victimized by racism or domestic violence can choose to avoid these res, which they believe might trigger a past trauma.”
  2. The second section first talks about the generation change and the rules and guidelines for school also changes. Then it shifts to Social media and the impact to children these days. The use of social media have changed. There more depression or anxiety to people rising on and off campus from mental illness. The use of antidepressant drugs to treat them is the quickest and easiest way. I agree with the rise of depression and anxiety and the moral guidelines have changed throughout the years of generation change. There is more restrictions on what to say, express, and think. For example, I have seen many students post about how the answers to their questions teachers have answered is either silly or does not makes sense. Also posting ratings about the teacher which shows a negative influence on what social media has to us. As the article says “Social media has also fundamentally shifted the balance of power in relationships between students and faculty.”
  3. Critical thinking may cause fixed mindset. Since fixed mindset is to give up easily on things and let emotion take control instead of thinking that you can. Therefore with school teaching critical thinking can leads to discomfort and anger which can cause fixed mindset to open and making people less understanding. As it says in the article “Socratic methods is a way of teaching critical thinking…such questioning sometimes leads to discomfort and anger on the way to understanding.”
