When it comes to STEM many people believe that it is important and it provides an advantage to economics in this country. But many did not learn to understand is the importance of liberal arts. As Scheuer says “The STEM disciplines are obviously important to economic productivity, but so is the entire rainbow of human knowledge and the ability to think critically” (paragraph 7). This states the importance of liberal arts and many people tend to forget about how liberal arts influence people to think more critically. Ungar, and I agree with what ignore is saying about STEM education is important, but so is learning about the liberal arts in order to become a well-rounded person. Ungar says “however, that success in scientific and technical fields will be greater if it comes at the expense of a broad background in other areas of the liberal arts.” (paragraph 5). This also implies the importance of liberal arts and how only liberal arts can make us learn more in the broader term of science which relates to Scheuer.
When some people hear the phrase “liberal education”, their mind immediately jumps to politics. It is crucial to understand that liberal education does not revolve around politics. According to Ungar, a liberal education “promotes the idea of listening to all points of view and not relying on a single ideology, and examining all approaches to solving a problem rather than assuming that one technique or perspective has all the answers” (paragraph 5). This means that liberal education does not involve politics when teaching. On the other hand, Scheuer explains how liberal education is “a wellspring of ideas and questions, and a way of promoting flexibility and openness to diverse perspectives” (paragraph 3). This relates to Ungar’s argument that liberal education integrates a multitude of perspectives into its curriculum.
