HW for 3/3

Liberal Arts education is very important for students to be able to strive in future workplace. In Scheuer’s Critical Thinking and Liberal Arts he makes points on liberal arts can develop critical thinking and become a successful person in the future. He states that ““It [critical thinking] heightens our abilities to speak, listen, write, and think, making us better learners, communicators, team members, and citizens” (Paragraph 29). This shows what critical thinking can make someone have all the skills and be able to be a successful citizen. I agree with Scheuer’s idea that critical thinking can develop a well rounded person and have all the skills needed for future workplace. From my experience thought middle school and high school, the core curriculum such as English is required to take in school. This prepares us to have the writing, speaking, and listening skills. We also had gym class that is also required in order to develop the team working skills and communication with other students. Unger who wrote 7 Major Misperceptions About the Liberal Arts also had similar ideas as Scheuer. He states that liberal arts can make students be successful in the future workplace. He states “A 2009 survey for the Association of American Colleges and Universities actually found that more than three-quarters of our nation’s employers recommend that college bound students pursue a liberal education….the ability to effectively communicate orally and writing; and almost almost as many urged the development of better critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills” (Misconception 2). This shows that workplace nowadays requires the ability to have critical thinking and the skills to communicate with one another. This is similar to what Scheuer says on how it is important to develop these skills and become a well rounded person. Therefore, from the two authors, it shows that critical thinking and developing many skills such as oral and writing is what we need to become successful and fulfilled to be at future workplace.

UNE Core Handbook states the core theme of what liberal arts will include in this school. It includes the expectations for each major and rules to prepare us for the future.  In the Core Values Statement section, the handbook declares that “Through the Core Curriculum, students will develop foundational knowledge and critical thinking skills that are necessary for understanding and assuming their roles in natural, social, humanistic, and other environments” (2). This shows how the school is preparing us with different kinds of knowledge and critical thinking that is included in the liberal arts studies. The core value is very similar to the Scheuer’s idea of integrated curriculum which includes many majors that UNE offers as the core curriculum. Scheuer states “America’s liberal arts colleges, embraces the ideal of the integrated curriculum, encompassing virtually all nonprofessional higher learning, from the natural and social sciences to the humanities and the performing arts. At its best, this comprehensive vision recognizes both the value and the limitations of such categories, along with the consequent need for interdisciplinary learning”(Paragraph 9). This shows that integrated curriculum includes many types of subjects that will develop students critical thinking as well as the skills students will have that is useful for all the subjects.

In UNE Core Handbook, Scheuer’s Critical Thinking and Liberal Arts and Ungar’s 7 Major Misperceptions About the Liberal Arts they all focus on the idea of citizenship and how liberal arts will make students a better citizen in society. UNE Core Handbook states that “Inspire students to become engaged citizens using their disciplinary perspectives” (4). This shows that UNE is preparing students to become a well rounded citizen with different perspectives. Scheuer states”we all need to be well-informed, critical citizens. And the liberal arts prepare students for citizenship in all three senses- civic, economic, and cultural (Paragraph 20). This means that citizenship has three main parts of it and that liberal arts can prepare students for all three categories which allows students to become a well rounded citizen. Ungar states “the traditional, well-rounded preparation that the liberal arts offer is a better investment than ever—that the future demands of citizenship will require not narrow technical or job-focused training, but rather a subtle understanding of the complex influences that shape the world we live in” (Misperception 1). This means that citizenship is a skill required for future workplaces and it is important to have to become successful int he future. Therefore all of three authors focused on the topic of citizenship and the importance of it.
