HW for 3/17

Coordination

  1. This is beneficial since students can gain more knowledge and develop well rounded skills that can be used in the workplace after graduation. This is a compound sentence since I joined two sentences with AND. I wanted to show that it is important for student to gain knowledge but also to develop the skills that is used in the workplace.
  2. This shows that citizenship is not only a skill required for future workplaces but also something needed to help shape a better world for the future. This is a compound sentence since I joined two sentences with BUT. I wanted to show that citizenship has more than just a skill.

Subordination

  1. As explained in Scheuer’s Critical Thinking and Liberal Arts, there are three models of liberal arts education. I used As to explain that I am talking about Scheuer’s article.
  2. Scheuer states that “It [critical thinking] heightens our abilities to speak, listen, write, and think, making us better learners, communicators, team members, and citizens” (29).This is a complex sentence because the first part is a dependent clause and the second part is the independent clause. I used Scheuer states that to have evidence to why critical thinking is important.

Original

University of New England also offers liberal arts curriculum that has a great opportunity for students to learn and be ready for the workplace. The UNE Core Handbook states the core theme of what liberal arts will provide and the expectations for each core curriculum will prepare us for the future. In the Core Values Statement section, the handbook says that “Through the Core Curriculum, students will develop foundational knowledge and critical thinking skills that are necessary for understanding and assuming their roles in natural, social, humanistic, and other environments” (2). This implies how the school is preparing students with different kinds of knowledge and critical thinking that is included in the liberal arts studies. The core value is very similar to Scheuer’s idea of integrated curriculum which includes many majors that UNE offers as the core curriculum. Scheuer states “America’s liberal arts colleges, embraces the ideal of the integrated curriculum, encompassing virtually all nonprofessional higher learning, from the natural and social sciences to the humanities and the performing arts. At its best, this comprehensive vision recognizes both the value and the limitations of such categories, along with the consequent need for interdisciplinary learning”(Paragraph 9). This means that an integrated curriculum includes many types of subjects that will develop students’ critical thinking as well as the skills students will have that is useful for all the subjects. The UNE core curriculum also requires students to take them no matter what major students are in which goes with the integrated curriculum Scheuer is talking about.

The UNE core curriculum also requires students to take a variety of subjects no matter what major students are in which goes with the integrated curriculum Scheuer is talking about. This can help prepare students to have basic knowledge of different subjects. This is beneficial since students can gain more knowledge and develop well rounded skills that can be used in the workplace after graduation.

I added more of how UNE is preparing students to become successful and also why having a integrated curriculum is beneficial. There is more of my idea into the paper than just the evidence from Scheuer and UNE handbook.
